Destiny Garcia is a mother, an advocate, and a woman in recovery. As someone who has gone through expungement, Destiny knows first-hand how complicated the process can be and the barriers that a criminal record can have on people. Destiny is passionate about living in recovery loudly, and her story has reached the halls of Congress as well as national and international media. She hopes that her story can bring awareness not just to substance use disorder but to the benefits of programs like expungement. Destiny is committed to increasing awareness of Utah’s transformative Law among individuals with records and advocating for the national extension of the policy. Destiny received the 2023 Liberty Bell award presented by the Utah State Bar to a nonlawyer who has prompted better understanding of the rule of law; encouraged a greater respect for the law and the courts; stimulated a sense of civic responsibility; and contributed to good government in the community
